About Ultimate and VOTS Leagues

Ultimate frisbee (or ultimate disc) is a high energy, non-contact team sport. It combines elements of many different sports including soccer, basketball, and football. Ultimate is played on a rectangular shaped field with end zones shaped like football end zones. Each team consists of seven players. The disc is passed from teammate to teammate until somebody catches the disc in the end zone for a score.

The Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association (VOTS) organizes adult leagues (18 and up, ages 16-17 with parental waiver) with two primary goals in mind:

1. to introduce new players to the sport of Ultimate.
2. to provide a place for all levels of players to play in a competitive, team-oriented atmosphere.

We play by USAU's current ruleset with some league specific variations found on the League Rules Page.

How is league structured?

Basics

• When: All Spring League Games (both divisions) will be on Thursday nights, 8pm, beginning February 19th.
  Finals (both divisions) will be Saturday, April 18th, in the 2–10pm range, depending on league size.
• Where: Games will be at Tempe Sports Complex with a few games at Benedict Sports Complex or Pecos Park.
• The Spring Leagues will be run with two separate divisions.

Mixed Division

• On-field personnel ratio of at least 3 woman-matching players.
• Beginners welcome! Woman-matching players new to ultimate play for free!
• Since the number of teams in Mixed Division is dependent on woman-matching player registration and there is not an option this season to play in both divisions, woman-matching players can only sign up for Mixed Division.
• Woman-matching players new to the sport will be guaranteed to be placed on a team with another player they request. We expect that most baggage requests (people requesting to play on the same team) can be accommodated. Every attempt will be made to fill baggage requests, including multiple requests, with priority to new players and woman-matching players.

Open Division

• Beginners are welcome!
• Man-matching players' stated preference of division will be acted upon if possible. If you only want a certain division, say so. (This will be a question on the registration form.)
• We expect that most baggage requests (people requesting to play on the same team) can be accommodated. Every attempt will be made to fill baggage requests, including multiple requests, with priority to new players and woman-matching players.

Do I need to know how to play?

Absolutely not! We teach all new players basic throws as well as the rules and strategies of ultimate throughout the season. As a new player, you will be placed on a team with moderate to experienced players who will show you the ropes and teach you the game.

What do I need to play?

You will need to bring:

1. Non-metal cleats (or tennis shoes if you don't have cleats).
2. Water.
3. A shirt in your team's color.

Anything else?

As per General League Policies:

1. VOTS discourages dogs at VOTS-sponsored leagues. If participants do bring dogs to VOTS-sponsored leagues, the owner must be aware of and abide by all applicable local leash laws.
2. No glass is allowed on the fields.
3. Under NO circumstances should anybody drive onto the fields.

Do I need to have a team to sign up?

No. All players sign up as individuals and will be drafted on to a team within their appropriate division.

Can I play on the same team as my friends?

Woman-matching players new to the sport will be guaranteed to be placed on a team with another player they request!

We expect that most baggage requests (people requesting to play on the same team) can be accommodated. Every attempt will be made to fill baggage requests, including multiple requests, with priority to new players and woman-matching players.

What is the player cap and the wait list?

Initial player cap: 140 man-matching players, 80 woman-matching players. A wait list will be instituted *before* these caps are met to avoid over-filling the league.

How much does league cost?

All registrations: $38
Except woman-matching players new to ultimate play for free!

Note: Spring League will NOT include a shirt or disc.

Registration/Payment Confirmation

Google Forms will send you an email containing the registration information that you provided.

Below: Last name and first name will be added to the confirmation sheet automatically when your registration is received. If your name isn't on the list, we don't have a registration from you.

Status is updated in batches, usually once a day in the morning.

• Blank: If status is blank, your status hasn't been updated yet.
• Payment Needed: We don't have a payment receipt from you. Please, click the button above to pay, or contact the webmaster if you believe this is in error.
• Completed: Your league fee has been received and you're all set to play some ultimate. (Unless you're age 16-17 and we need a waiver from you. Please, print and bring a signed waiver to your first game.)
• Wait List: You're on the Wait List. DO NOT PAY if you're on the Wait List. If you're added to the draft roster or a team, a VOTS representative will contact you.

If you are age 16-17, please print a Waiver and bring the signed waiver to your first league game.
You will not be allowed to play without a waiver.
