About Ultimate and VOTS Leagues

Ultimate frisbee (or ultimate disc) is a high energy, non-contact team sport. It combines elements of many different sports including soccer, basketball, and football. Ultimate is played on a rectangular field with end zones shaped like football end zones. Each team consists of seven players. The disc is passed from teammate to teammate until somebody catches the disc in the end zone for a score.

The Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association (VOTS) organizes adult leagues (18 and up, ages 16-17 with parental waiver) with two primary goals in mind:

1. to introduce new players to the sport of Ultimate.
2. to provide a place for all levels of players to play in a competitive, team-oriented atmosphere.

We play by USAU's current rule set.

How is league structured?

Basics

• League is for adults (age 18+) of all experience levels. Beginners welcome! Woman-matching players new to ultimate play for free.
• Mixed League: Teams are formed with and play on the field with a specified personnel ratio of man-matching and woman-matching players which will be set in the league rules according to actual registration numbers. We will have an initial cap of 16 mixed teams, 256 total players. 17 players per team; 12 man-matching & 5 woman-matching players per team (5/2 ratio on the field) or 11 man-matching & 6 woman-matching players per team (option of 4/3 ratio on the field), depending on registration numbers.
• Jersey and disc included.

Schedule

• Games at 8pm.
• Games will be Tuesdays or Thursdays, starting September 29th.
• Teams will play primarily on one night or the other with a limited number of crossover games on the opposite night.
Depending on registration numbers:
• there will likely be a different location for Halloween week.
• teams may have one or two weeks where they play both nights that week.
• teams may have one or two weeks where they play a doubleheader starting at 6:15 PM
• Games will be at Scottsdale Sports Complex (8081 E Princess Dr, Scottsdale).
• Finals: November 21st, starting in the morning in Tempe.

Do I need to know how to play?

Absolutely not! We teach all new players basic throws as well as the rules and strategies of ultimate throughout the season. As a new player, you will be placed on a team with moderate to experienced players who will show you the ropes and teach you the game.

What do I need to play?

You will need to bring:

1. Non-metal cleats (or tennis shoes if you don't have cleats).
2. Water (you'll get thirsty).

Anything else?

As per General League Policies:

1. VOTS discourages dogs at VOTS-sponsored leagues. If participants do bring dogs to VOTS-sponsored leagues, the owner must be aware of and abide by all applicable local leash laws.
2. No glass is allowed on the fields.
3. Under NO circumstances should anybody drive onto the fields.

Fall League 2026 Registration

Do I need to have a team to sign up?

No! All players sign up as individuals and will be drafted on to a team.

Can I play on the same team as my friends?

Woman-matching players new to ultimate are guaranteed to be placed on a team with one person they ask for.

We expect that most baggage requests (people requesting to play on the same team) can be accommodated. Every attempt will be made to fill baggage requests with priority to new players and woman-matching players.

What is the player cap and the wait list?

For 16 teams, initial player cap is 176 man-matching players, 80 woman-matching players. A wait list will be instituted *before* these caps are met to avoid over-filling or if one side of the registration (man-matching or woman-matching) out-paces the other. If registration switches to a wait list, please, still sign up for league.

Captaining

Mixed teams will have a man-matching captain and a woman-matching captain.

In addition to picking your team at draft, captaining includes:

• reporting scores
• helping sound time caps
• occasionally setting up fields
• communicating game details with your team
• working to foster a safe and inclusive experience for all players

How much does league cost?

$70

Includes disc, jersey, food & drinks during playoffs.

Google Forms will send you an email containing the registration information that you provided.

Below: Last name and first name will be added to the confirmation sheet automatically when your registration is received. If your name isn't on the list, we don't have a registration from you.

Status is updated in batches, usually once a day in the morning.

• Blank: If status is blank, your status hasn't been updated yet.
• Payment Needed: We don't have a payment receipt from you. Please, click the button above to pay, or contact the webmaster if you believe this is in error.
• Completed: Your league fee has been received and you're all set to play some ultimate. (Unless you're age 16-17 and we need a waiver from you. Please, print and bring a signed waiver to your first game.)
• Wait List: You're on the Wait List. DO NOT PAY if you're on the Wait List. If you're added to the draft roster or a team, a VOTS representative will contact you.
