Instructional League - Winter 2016

What is Ultimate Frisbee Instructional League?

This instructional league is offered by Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association (VOTS). This three session coed league is focused on learning all aspects of Ultimate Frisbee, including throwing, catching, and the basics of offensive and defensive strategies. Each session will begin with some warm-up exercises and drills, throwing, and eventually scrimmages to work on new skills. This is a great opportunity to learn fundamentals, get some exercise, meet new people, and have fun while you're at it! This Instructional League will help prepare any new player for the B Division League in January as well as the larger Spring League starting in March.

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate Frisbee is a high energy, non-contact team sport. It combines elements of many different sports including soccer, basketball, and football. Ultimate is played on a rectangular shaped field with end zones shaped like football end zones. Each team consists of seven players. The disc is passed from teammate to teammate (there is no running/walking with the disc) until somebody catches the disc in the end zone for a score.

Who can sign up?

The league is open to players of all experience levels, ages 18 and up (16-17 with parental waiver), but is geared for novice players. Novice players include brand new players as well as players who simply want to gain a better understanding of the game. You do not need a team to sign up. Teams will be formed to allow games to be played.

What do I need to play?

Bring sneakers or non-metal cleats and clothing comfortable for running. It is essential that you bring a white shirt and a dark-colored shirt each week, so we can divide into teams. Please make sure you are dressed warmly enough that you can stay warm while we explain drills, rules, and strategy. Bring a water bottle to make sure you stay hydrated. Every brand new player will receive a disc, but all players should try and bring a disc to each session (preferably an official USA Ultimate Ultrastar 175g and not a Whamo).

When does the season start and how long does it last?

Updated 11/28/16:

We have decided to postpone the start of Instructional League to allow more people to sign up and to align with league in Jan. The session on 11/29 is cancelled. The session on Tuesday 12/6 is now the first night. January sessions should be added Thursday Jan 5 and Jan 12(subject to finalizing staffing). This will give 4 nights total instead of 3 and will also align some sessions just prior to the start of B league in January.
