About Ultimate and VOTS Leagues

Ultimate frisbee (or ultimate disc) is a high energy, non-contact team sport. It combines elements of many different sports including soccer, basketball, and football. Ultimate is played on a rectangular shaped field with end zones shaped like football end zones. Each team consists of seven players. The disc is passed from teammate to teammate until somebody catches the disc in the end zone for a score.

The Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association (VOTS) organizes adult leagues (18 and up, ages 16-17 with parental waiver) with two primary goals in mind:

1. to introduce new players to the sport of Ultimate.
2. to provide a place for all levels of players to play in a competitive, team-oriented atmosphere.

We play primarily by USAU's Current Ruleset. League specific rules can be found on the Rules Page.

How is league structured?

• Wednesdays, 8pm
• May 1st through June 26th
• This is a Mixed League. Default on-field personnel ratio will be determined based on registration numbers.
• Beginners welcome! Woman-matching players new to the sport play free and are guaranteed to be placed on a team with one person they ask for.
• 6+ regular season games. Again, exact format of league will be based on registration numbers.
• Games are at Tempe Benedict Park and Tempe Escalante Park in May and at Mesa Lehi Sports Park in June.

Do I need to know how to play?

Absolutely not! We teach all new players basic throws as well as the rules and strategies of ultimate throughout the season. As a new player, you will be placed on a team with moderate to experienced players who will show you the ropes and teach you the game.

What do I need to play?

You will need to bring:

1. Non-metal cleats (or tennis shoes if you don't have cleats).
2. Water (you'll get thirsty).

Anything else?

As per General League Policies:

1. VOTS discourages dogs at VOTS-sponsored leagues. If participants do bring dogs to VOTS-sponsored leagues, the owner must be aware of and abide by all applicable local leash laws.
2. No glass is allowed on the fields.
3. Under NO circumstances should anybody drive onto the fields.

Do I need to have a team to sign up?

No! All players sign up as individuals and are placed on teams which even out the number of beginner, intermediate, and advanced players per team.

Can I play on the same team as my friends?

Woman-matching players new to the sport will be guaranteed to be placed on a team with another player they request!

We expect that most baggage requests (people requesting to play on the same team) can be accommodated. Every attempt will be made to fill baggage requests, including multiple requests, with priority to new players and woman-matching players.

What is the player cap and the wait list?

Initial player cap: 36 man-matching players, 36 woman-matching players. A wait list will be instituted *before* these caps are met to avoid over-filling or if one side of the registration (man-matching or woman-matching) out-paces the other. If registration switches to a wait list, please, still sign up for league. The number of teams may be expanded if there is enough interest.

If you are age 16-17, please print a Waiver and bring the signed waiver to your first league game.
You will not be allowed to play without a waiver.

STEP 2: Pay Your League Fee ($24)

Note: Payment made without filling out the registration form will not count as a registration. We need both!

Registration/Payment Confirmation

Google Forms will send you an email containing the registration information that you provided.

Below: Last name and first name will be added to the confirmation sheet automatically when your registration is received. If your name isn't on the list, we don't have a registration from you.

Status is updated in batches, usually once a day in the morning.

• Blank: If status is blank, your status hasn't been updated yet.
• Payment Needed: We don't have a payment receipt from you. Please, click the button above to pay, or contact the webmaster if you believe this is in error.
• Completed: Your league fee has been received and you're all set to play some ultimate. (Unless you're age 16-17 and we need a waiver from you. Please, print and bring a signed waiver to your first game.)
• Wait List: You're on the Wait List. DO NOT PAY if you're on the Wait List. If you're added to the draft roster or a team, a VOTS representative will contact you.
