About Ultimate and VOTS Leagues

Ultimate frisbee (or ultimate disc) is a high energy, non-contact team sport. It combines elements of many different sports including soccer, basketball, and football. Ultimate is played on a rectangular shaped field with end zones shaped like football end zones. Each team consists of seven players. The disc is passed from teammate to teammate until somebody catches the disc in the end zone for a score.

The Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association (VOTS) organizes adult leagues (18 and up, ages 16-17 with parental waiver) with two primary goals in mind:

1. to introduce new players to the sport of Ultimate
2. to provide a place for all levels of players to play in a competitive, team-oriented atmosphere

We play by USAU's 11th edition rules.

How is league structured?

A/B Winter League is a continuing experiment for VOTS. With the expansion of Ultimate as a sport and VOTS as a group, the skill distribution among our players has become, perhaps, too wide for everyone who wants to play to have a place in league. We're going to try something that many other vibrant ultimate communities do on a regular basis.

The A/B Winter League will be broken into two division:

• A Division: More competitive, experience required. Top quarter of players in a full spring/fall league should play in A division of this league.
• B Division: Beginner-friendly. Beginners and the bottom quarter of players in a full spring/fall league should play in the B Division.
• The majority of players, the middle half, can play in either league. For instance some mid-level players could use the opportunity to take a more active role on the field or act as captains and teachers to the new players in the B Division. Or they they could choose to play in the more competitive A Division.
• Player's stated preference of divisions will be acted upon when possible. If you only want a certain division, say so. Not all players in A division will be or should be higher skill/experience than all players in B division. Middle players with no strong preference are encouraged to sign up as such in order to balance the numbers as required to form teams.

Update from Tim, 1/5/22:

There will be a welcome night (all level welcome pick up) on Thursday 1/6 at Pecos Park. I will try to get a questionnaire out in the morning (1/5) to make sure that there will be a decent amount of players on such short notice and to see if we have enough volunteers to help run a beginner session on one side. I'll put out results Wednesday night.

"A" division will be only four teams, so rather than split nights, A division will be on Thursday only. This will start with another welcome (A pickup or possibly a pre-season game) on 1/13 and regular games starting 1/20.

"B" division will be only four teams, so rather than split nights, B division will be on Wednesday only. This will start with a beginner night/clinic on 1/12 and regular season games starting 1/19.

• Both are mixed leagues. Each league will have 7 schedules games plus an end of season tournament.
• Pecos Park, 8pm
• A League will run Tuesday/Thursday nights; a given team will play only once per week with about 70% of games on their given night but a few crossover games on the other night for their league. (ex. If Tues is your team's primary night, your crossover games will be on Thurs.) Regular season A League games will start the second or third week of January depending on registration numbers.
• B League will run Monday/Wednesday nights; a given team will play only once per week with about 70% of games on their primary night but a few crossover games on the other night for their league. (ex. If your team's primary night is Monday, your crossover games will be on Weds.) In order to minimize conflict with the Sunday women's league, the first B league regular season game will be no earlier than Wednesday, Jan 12. The first regular season Monday game will be Jan 24 so this will be the only regular season Monday game on a day after a Sunday league day. Monday holiday field closures also mean that Monday teams will play one extra Wednesday game.
• Players may have the opportunity to play in both leagues. In order to try to build a more even personnel ratio, priority to play both leagues will be given to woman-matching players.
• There will be pre-season games or welcome nights earlier in January.
• A League finals will be Saturday evening March 5, 4-10pm. B League finals the evening of Saturday March 12, 4-10pm.

Do I need to know how to play?

Experience will be required in A Division.

For B Division: Absolutely not! We'll teach new players basic throws as well as the rules and strategies of ultimate throughout the season.

What do I need to play?

You will need to bring:

1. Non-metal cleats (or tennis shoes if you don't have cleats).
2. Water (you'll get thirsty).

Anything else?

As per General League Policies:

1. VOTS discourages dogs at VOTS-sponsored leagues. If participants do bring dogs to VOTS-sponsored leagues, the owner must be aware of and abide by all applicable local leash laws.
2. No glass is allowed on the fields.
3. Under NO circumstances should anybody drive onto the fields.

A/B Winter League 2022 League Registration

Do I need to have a team to sign up?

No! All players sign up as individuals and will be drafted on to a team within their appropriate division.

Can I play on the same team as my friends?

A new player can sign up to be "baggage" with another player.

The concept of baggage is designed solely to introduce brand NEW PLAYERS to the sport by allowing them play on a team with someone they know. You will have the opportunity to list the person you are bagging with on the registration form. (One only, please.) Baggage is NOT intended to ensure that couples & carpoolers get to play together. If couples/carpoolers wish to play together, you will have the option to explain the situation on the registration form. Baggage approvals will be left to the discretion of the league director. While we try to accommodate preferences, we reserve the right to refuse baggage requests. Other options for couples/carpoolers: captain together or choose a same night as preference.

What is the player cap and the wait list?

Initial play cap: 80 men, 96 women. This will be evaluated and likely extended based on registration numbers. A wait list will be instituted *before* these caps are met to avoid over-filling the league.

How much does league cost?

The fee for each league registration is $20 before Dec. 31st. If you are interested in playing both leagues (there will be a question on the registration form), only pay for one league at sign-up. You'll be instructed to pay for a second if you're added to the other league's draft roster. A/B Winter Leagues will NOT include a shirt or discs.
