2009 Southwest Club Regionals

VOTS hosted the UPA Southwest Regional tournament over the weekend of October 3rd and 4th.

Congratulations to the teams who have secured bids to the National Championship tournament in Sarasota, FL:

  • Johnny Bravo (Boulder, CO) and Streetgang (San Diego, CA) in the open division.
  • Lady Condors (Santa Barbara, CA), Rare Air (Boulder, CO) and Safari (San Diego, CA) in the women's division.
  • Barrio (Tucson, AZ), LA Metro (Los Angeles, CA) and Cougars (Denver, CO) in the mixed (coed) division.
  • Beyonders (Santa Barbara, CA) and Double Black (Denver, CO) in the master's division.

Stephen So has provided some great photography of local favorites No, YOU Go Long, PHXation, and Sprawl, as well as the Johnny Bravo vs Street Gang game.

Finally, let's give a big THANK YOU to Keith Aspinall, our intrepid tournament director, and coordinators Randy Ricks, Jeff Grobe, Brian Calle, and Heather Kinkead.




The UPA Southwest Club Regionals will be held on October 3-4 at the Scottsdale Sports Complex in Scottsdale, located at 8200 E Bell Rd. The site is about 25 minutes from Sky Harbor Airport, and is just off the 101 freeway in the northeast Valley. From the airport, exit Sky Harbor east via the 202. After about 5 miles, take the offramp to the 101 northbound. Exit at Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd, and continue north on the frontage road to Bell Road.

Team captains, please join the yahoogroup that has been created to distribute information about regionals.

Bid Info:
   1. Tourney fee is $270
   2. Payment must be made at the 8:00 am captain's meeting on Saturday morning.
   3. Checks should be made out to "VOTS".

Hotels

There will not be a tournament hotel. Options include:
  • Condo-style: Scottsdale Villa Mirage and Scottsdale Links Resort are near the tourney site and have units with up to 3 bedrooms. Use code ZIRWB for a discount at either site.
  • Budget hotel: Sleep Inn is also close to the fields(1.5 miles). Rooms with 2 doubles are $71/night.
  • Options at Kayak



  • Party/Restaurants

    No regionals party is planned. If your team is looking for a bar-like place, Saturday night, the Four Peaks Brewery is popular. It is located at 15730 North Pima Road.

    The North Scottsdale area also has numberous restaurants. Primary spots include:
  • Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd & Scottsdale Rd (SE corner): Cantina Laredo, Pizza Picazzo, Redfish, Baja Fresh, In & Out, etc. The other corners all have at least one restaurant as well.
  • Scottsdale Rd & the 101/Mayo Blvd.
  • Kierland Commons (Scottsdale Rd. & Greenway Rd.) is a bit more upscale (i.e. more pricey)
  • Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd & 101 (west side) has restaurants and the Four Peaks Brewery




  • The two nearest emergency rooms are:
  • Mayo Clinic Hospital, 5777 E Mayo Blvd
  • Scottsdale Healthcare Shea, 9003 E Shea Blvd.
