About Ultimate and VOTS leagues

Ultimate Frisbee is a high energy, non-contact team sport. It combines elements of many different sports including soccer, basketball, and football. Ultimate is played on a rectangular shaped field with end zones shaped like football end zones. Each team consists of seven players. The disc is passed from teammate to teammate until somebody catches the disc in the end zone for a score.

The Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association (VOTS) organizes adult leagues (18 and up, ages 16-17 with parental waiver) in the spring and fall with two primary goals:

  1. to introduce new players to the sport of Ultimate
  2. to provide a place for all levels of players to play in a competitive, team-oriented atmosphere
How is league structured?

  • 16 teams, cap of 272 total players. 17 players per team; 12 men & 5 women or 11 men & 6 women, depending on registration numbers.
  • Teams play a minimum 5/2 ratio of men to women on the field. If women's registration reaches 96 women, there will be 6 women per team and 4/3 ratio will be an option.
  • Teams will play one game a week; each team will have a similar schedule with no night preferences available this season. First game will be Feb. 3rd.
  • Each team will play
    • February: 2 Tuesdays and 2 Thursdays
    • March: 2 Thursdays
    • April: 1 Thursday (either 4/9 or 4/16); most teams will play an additional game on Thurs. 4/23
  • Regular season games will be played at 8pm at Tempe Sports Complex or Benedict Fields in Tempe.
  • Playoffs: Saturday, April 25th, 4-10pm. Each team will play 2-3 games.

Do I need to know how to play?

Absolutely not! We teach all new players basic throws as well as the rules and strategies of ultimate throughout the season, starting with the preseason game. As a new player, you will be placed on a team with moderate to experienced players who will show you the ropes and teach you the game.

Is there any place to play before league starts?

Any event on VOTS calendar labeled 'Open' is open to all players of all levels. You can also get practice/scrimmage announcements by joining the VOTS Players email list by email or by filling in the field on the left side of the VOTS webpage.

What do I need to play?

You will need to bring:

  1. Non-metal cleats (or tennis shoes if you don't have cleats).
  2. Water (you'll get thirsty).
Anything else?

As per General League Policies

  1. VOTS discourages dogs at VOTS-sponsored leagues. If participants do bring dogs to VOTS-sponsored leagues, the owner must be aware of and abide by all applicable local leash laws.
  2. Alcohol IS permitted on the field in cups and cans. No glass is allowed.
  3. Any underage participant in violation of the Arizona alcohol consumption laws or any adult participant who furnishes alcohol to or purchases alcohol for an underage participant is subject to immediate suspension for a time at the determination/discretion of the board.
  4. Under NO circumstances should anybody drive onto the fields.

Spring 2015 League Registration

Do I need to have a team to sign up?

No! All players sign up as individuals and are placed on teams which even out the number of beginner, intermediate, and advanced players per team.

Can I play on the same team as my friends?

A new player can sign up to be "baggage" with another player.

The concept of baggage is designed solely to introduce brand NEW PLAYERS to the sport by allowing them play on a team with someone they know. You will have the opportunity to list the person you are bagging with on the registration form. (One only, please.) Baggage is NOT intended to ensure that couples & carpoolers get to play together. If couples/carpoolers wish to play together, you will have the option to explain the situation on the registration form. Captains will see your note during the draft and attempt (but not guarantee) to pick you on the same team. Baggage approvals will be left to the discretion of the league director. While we try to accommodate preferences, we reserve the right to refuse baggage requests. Other options for couples/carpoolers: captain together or choose a same night as preference.

What is the player cap and the wait list?

Initial player cap: 176 men & 80 women.
A wait list will be instituted *before* these caps are met to allow for male/female ratio flexibility.

If 96 women sign up for league, the first 176 men will be drafted and the ratio will be 4/3, offense calls.
If the cap of 96 women is not met, the first 80 women and first 192 men will be drafted on to teams with a 5/2 male/female ratio.

Again, a wait list will be put into place *before* these caps are met. Registration will close Tuesday, January 21th, 11:59pm.

How much does league cost

The fee for league registration is $35 and will include a wicking shirt in your team color!
