About Ultimate and VOTS Leagues

Ultimate frisbee (or ultimate disc) is a high energy, non-contact team sport. It combines elements of many different sports including soccer, basketball, and football. Ultimate is played on a rectangular shaped field with end zones shaped like football end zones. Each team consists of seven players. The disc is passed from teammate to teammate until somebody catches the disc in the end zone for a score.

The Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association (VOTS) organizes adult leagues (18 and up, ages 16-17 with parental waiver) with two primary goals in mind:

1. to introduce new players to the sport of Ultimate
2. to provide a place for all levels of players to play in a competitive, team-oriented atmosphere

We play by USAU's 11th edition rules.

How is league structured?

A/B Winter League is a continuing experiment for VOTS. With the expansion of Ultimate as a sport and VOTS as a group, the skill distribution among our players has become, perhaps, too wide for everyone who wants to play to have a place in league. We're going to try something that many other vibrant ultimate communities do on a regular basis.

The A/B Winter League will be broken into two division:

• A Division: More competitive, experience required. Top quarter of players in a full spring/fall league should play in A division of this league.
• B Division: Beginner-friendly. Beginners and the bottom quarter of players in a full spring/fall league should play in the B Division.
• The majority of players, the middle half, can play in either league. For instance some mid-level players could use the opportunity to take a more active role on the field or act as captains and teachers to the new players in the B Division. Or they they could choose to play in the more competitive A Division.
• Player's stated preference of divisions will be acted upon when possible. If you only want a certain division, say so. Not all players in A division will be or should be higher skill/experience than all players in B division. Middle players with no strong preference are encouraged to sign up as such in order to balance the numbers as required to form teams.

Details specific to this league:

• Up to 8 Coed teams per division. 16 teams total.
• Weeknight games 8pm-10pm at primarily Tempe Sports Complex. (Fields)
• Games start Jan 7. Finals are tentatively set for Saturday, Feb. 15th. Finals date is likely to change due to conflicts with other AZ ultimate events. We will try to clarify this in the near future.
• "A" League will primarily play on Tuesday; "B" League primarily on Thursday.
• Exact schedule is dependent on registration numbers. Teams will have 5-7 weeknight games plus playoffs.
• There could be up to two weeks in which a team plays on Tuesday and Thursday the same week. (Two weeks unlikely, one more likely, zero is possible.)

Standard gender ratio for all games is 5/2 ratio.
Offense may dictate 4/3 in any game in which EACH team meets one of these criteria:

1. Has 6 women present.
2. Has 5 women present and no more than 9 men.
3. Has 4 women present and no more than 7 men.

Do I need to know how to play?

Experience will be required in A Division.

For B Division: Absolutely not! We'll teach new players basic throws as well as the rules and strategies of ultimate throughout the season.

What do I need to play?

You will need to bring:

1. Non-metal cleats (or tennis shoes if you don't have cleats).
2. Water (you'll get thirsty).

Anything else?

As per General League Policies:

1. VOTS discourages dogs at VOTS-sponsored leagues. If participants do bring dogs to VOTS-sponsored leagues, the owner must be aware of and abide by all applicable local leash laws.
2. No glass is allowed on the fields.
3. Under NO circumstances should anybody drive onto the fields.

A/B Winter League 2020 League Registration

Do I need to have a team to sign up?

No! All players sign up as individuals and will be drafted on to a team within their appropriate division.

Can I play on the same team as my friends?

A new player can sign up to be "baggage" with another player.

The concept of baggage is designed solely to introduce brand NEW PLAYERS to the sport by allowing them play on a team with someone they know. You will have the opportunity to list the person you are bagging with on the registration form. (One only, please.) Baggage is NOT intended to ensure that couples & carpoolers get to play together. If couples/carpoolers wish to play together, you will have the option to explain the situation on the registration form. Baggage approvals will be left to the discretion of the league director. While we try to accommodate preferences, we reserve the right to refuse baggage requests. Other options for couples/carpoolers: captain together or choose a same night as preference.

What is the player cap and the wait list?

Initial play cap: 96 men, 80 women. This will be evaluated and likely extended based on registration numbers. A wait list will be instituted *before* these caps are met to avoid over-filling the league. Registration closes December 28th.

How much does league cost?

The fee for league registration is $20. A/B Winter League will NOT include a shirt or discs.
