Spring 2014 League Information

About Ultimate and VOTS leagues

Ultimate Frisbee is a high energy, non-contact team sport. It combines elements of many different sports including soccer, basketball, and football. Ultimate is played on a rectangular shaped field with end zones shaped like football end zones. Each team consists of seven players. The disc is passed from teammate to teammate until somebody catches the disc in the end zone for a score.

The Valley of the Sun Ultimate Association (VOTS) organizes adult leagues (18 and up, ages 16-17 with parental waiver) in the spring and Spring with two primary goals:

  1. to introduce new players to the sport of Ultimate
  2. to provide a place for all levels of players to play in a competitive, team-oriented atmosphere
How is league structured?

  • League will cap at 20 teams with 12 men and 5 women per team, based on a 5/2 ratio of men to women on the field.
  • Initial player caps are 172 men and 65 women. The wait list will begin before these caps in order to accommodate flexibility in the number of teams.
  • MONDAY nights - Each team will have a welcome night (at 6pm or 8pm, Feb. 17th or 24th), 5 nights of doubleheaders (7-10pm, starting Feb. 24 - April 7th), 1 crossover game (at 6 or 8pm, April 21st). There are no games on April 14th. Each team will have two byes during the season. The exact schedule will be determined by the number of registrants and teams.
  • MONDAY nights - 16 teams: each team will play 8 nights, starting either 2/17 or 2/24, all doubleheaders (7-10pm, 1 practice + full 15 game round robin) and then play a 16 team bracket (2-4 games) on 4/26.
  • Games will be played at Quail Run Park in Mesa.
  • Playoffs will be on Saturday, April 26.

Do I need to know how to play?

Absolutely not! We teach all new players basic throws as well as the rules and strategies of ultimate throughout the season. As a new player, you will be placed on a team with moderate to experienced players who will show you the ropes and teach you the game.

Is there any place to play before league starts?

Any event on VOTS calendar labeled 'Open' is open to all players of all levels. You can also get practice/scrimmage announcements by joining the VOTS Players email list by email or by filling in the field on the left side of the VOTS webpage. If you're a Facebook user, DISCepticons provides a comprehensive run-down of open games across the Valley.

What do I need to play?

You will need to bring:

  1. Non-metal cleats (or tennis shoes if you don't have cleats).
  2. Water (you'll get thirsty).
Anything else?

As per General League Policies

  1. VOTS discourages dogs at VOTS-sponsored leagues. If participants do bring dogs to VOTS-sponsored leagues, the owner must be aware of and abide by all applicable local leash laws.
  2. Alcohol IS NOT permitted at Quail Run. Please do not bring alcohol to the games.
  3. Any underage participant in violation of the Arizona alcohol consumption laws or any adult participant who furnishes alcohol to or purchases alcohol for an underage participant is subject to immediate suspension for a time at the determination/discretion of the board.
  4. Under NO circumstances should anybody drive onto the fields.

Spring 2014 League Registration

Do I need to have a team to sign up?

No! All players sign up as individuals and are placed on teams which even out the number of beginner, intermediate, and advanced players per team.

Can I play on the same team as my friends?

A new player can sign up to be "baggage" with another player.

The concept of baggage is designed solely to introduce brand NEW PLAYERS to the sport by allowing them play on a team with someone they know. You will have the opportunity to list the person you are bagging with on the registration form. (One only, please.) Baggage is NOT intended to ensure that couples & carpoolers get to play together. If couples/carpoolers wish to play together, you will have the option to explain the situation on the registration form. Captains will see your note during the draft and attempt (but not guarantee) to pick you on the same team. Baggage approvals will be left to the discretion of the league director. While we try to accommodate preferences, we reserve the right to refuse baggage requests. Other options for couples/carpoolers: captain together.

What is the player cap and the wait list?

Initial player cap: 172 men & 65 women.
A wait list will be instituted *before* these caps are met to allow for flexibility in the number of teams. Maximum number of players for this league: 240 men, 100 women.
